The Greatest Footballer ever

This weekend saw one of the greatest footballers of our time play a testimonial match at one of the cathedrals of football a place known as the home of football, Anfield.

This footballer is extremely well known and is much loved right around the world and not only loved by one clubs set of supporters but is loved by the wider football community.

Mass support for a single player is a rarity in today’s modern game where football players are worshipped by a particular football clubs set of supporters and that’s about as far as their support goes, it takes something special or someone special to grab the attention of every football fanatic and for them to actually like you whether or not they play for your club or not, its just a deep down desire that you want them to be playing for your club and if they do play for your club you want them to stay there forever. Some footballers get their appeal by been simply brilliant like Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona or by just been an all round good guy like Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil or just been an amazing defender like Philip Lahm of FC Bayern Munich.

My hero and the football player whom I regard to be one of the greatest footballers to play the beautiful game is of course the one thee only “Captain Fantastic” or “Stevie G” well his real name is actually Steven Gerrard, Liverpool Football Club’s captain since the age of 21, he is also currently England’s captain.

Steven Gerrard is well regarded as one of the best footballers in the world due to his commitment and love for Liverpool Football Club and his dedication to the clubs cause, ambitions and goals. He is widely loved due to his ability to play the killer pass, he probably has the best racking pass in the English Premier League, he also has the ability to score some of the most unbelievable goals from almost anywhere on the pitch, he also has the ability to take any player on and generally he beats them and he is well known for his ability to take a killer free kick. However, Steven Gerrard’s best quality or most loved quality is his ability to lead, his ability to unite a group of players and bring the most out of those players. Liverpool’s win over AC Milan in the 2005 UEFA Champions League Final in Istanbul is widely regarded as the greatest comeback in football of all time and is often regarded as the best Final in the history of the competition as well as Steven Gerrard been the player behind the famous comeback. Liverpool were loosing 3 nil at half time and seemingly had lost the match already, but, the Liverpool faithful were belting out “You’ll Never Walk Alone” during the half time break and at the start of the second half and Stevie G urged his team to fight and repay the fans for their commitment and support and suddenly the man himself Steven Gerrard scores an absolute cracking goal only to be followed moments later by team mate Vladimir Smicer who banged in another goal to make it 3-2 to AC Milan. With more encouragement from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, up steps Mr. Xabi Alonso who scores directly after missing his penalty and bought Liverpool to level up the scores at 3-3. Liverpool FC held the score at 3-3 and the game went on to a penalty shootout, which Liverpool ended up winning 3-2. The leadership and determination that Steven Gerrard showed during that UEFA Champions League Final earned him the right to be known as one of the greatest footballers of all time.

Steven Gerrard has won the FA Cup twice, the League Cup three times, the FA Community Shield twice, the UEFA Champions League once, the UEFA Cup once and he has won the UEFA Super Cup on two occasions. He has also won a host of individual accolades.

Incidentally Liverpool Football Club won the Steven Gerrard Testimonail match beating Olympiacos 2  nil with goals coming from Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson. The testimonial match was played in order for Liverpool Football Club to show their appreciating for Stevie G.
